Must read

The state of Jharkhand saw dramatic events unfold on Wednesday night as Chief Minister Hemant Soren resigned and was subsequently arrested by the Enforcement Directorate. In the midst of this, his party, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), appointed Cabinet minister Champai Soren as the new chief minister. Champai Soren is a long-time member of the JMM, often referred to as the ‘Jharkhand Tiger’, and has been serving the Saraikela constituency since 1995. He is known for his trade union activism and has previously held ministerial positions in the state government. His ascension to the top position comes at a time of unrest, following the resignation and arrest of Hemant Soren. There have been calls for protests and bandhs in reaction to the arrest, with Soren’s supporters citing political motivation behind the actions of the Enforcement Directorate.
