Maldives suspends three Deputy Ministers following India’s concern over disrespectful remarks against PM

Must read

The Indian High Commission in Maldives recently raised concerns about disrespectful remarks made by three Deputy Ministers of the Maldivian government about Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The remarks were made on social media and sparked a war of words, leading to Indian tourists cancelling hotel bookings in Maldives. The Maldivian government suspended the three Deputy Ministers involved and distanced itself from the comments, stating that they do not represent the government’s views. Prominent Maldivian figures, including former President Mohamed Nasheed and former Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid, condemned the remarks as reprehensible. This controversy comes amid tension between India and Maldives, as President Mohamed Muizzu previously requested India to withdraw its military presence from the archipelago. Despite this, Muizzu chose Turkey as the destination for his first foreign visit and plans to visit China in January. Chinese state media has praised Muizzu’s foreign policy, stating that it demonstrates a normal state-to-state relationship between the Maldives and India.
