It emphasizes the importance of clearly informing users about prohibited content and penal provisions and requires platforms to make reasonable efforts to prevent the sharing of prohibited information. The advisory also highlights the need for platforms to comply with existing IT rules and communicate their rules, regulations, privacy policy, and user agreement in the user’s preferred language. Recent ‘deepfake’ videos featuring actors have raised concerns about deceptive content, leading to demands in the Rajya Sabha for a SEBI-like regulatory body for social media platforms to curb the threat of deepfakes and synthetic videos, which are endangering democracy.
