In 2023, the opposition in India united in an alliance called INDIA in order to prevent Modi from becoming Prime Minister for a third time. The alliance aimed to unite the opposition parties and stop the division of votes, while simultaneously countering BJP’s nationalism. However, the alliance has faced various challenges and has fallen apart in the past 50 days.
In Bihar, Nitish Kumar has aligned with the NDA, leaving the opposition alliance, and in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s TMC is pursuing a go-it-alone policy. In Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, there are no visible alliances with the opposition India, and in Uttar Pradesh, the India alliance has been wiped out due to seat sharing issues between Akhilesh Yadav and the Congress. Separately, the Congress, RLD, and SP are headed in different directions, giving a potential lead to BJP. Additionally, Mayawati’s decision to go alone has changed the equation in Uttar Pradesh. In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party has announced that it will win 13 out of 13 seats, adding to the challenges faced by the opposition alliance. Gujarat and Haryana have also seen the separation of alliances between the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress, further weakening the opposition’s chances.
Now, as the opposition alliance falls apart, the BJP sees the division of opposition votes as an advantage, potentially leading to a significant victory in the upcoming elections.
