Government Warns Internet Intermediaries about Deepfake Threat | Delhi News

Must read

The Indian government has issued an advisory to social media and internet platforms to guard against deepfakes, digitally manipulated media that misrepresent or impersonate someone using artificial intelligence. The advisory mandates intermediaries like Instagram and Facebook to effectively communicate with users about the need to avoid posting or spreading deepfakes, as they can face punishment under the Indian Penal Code. It emphasizes the importance of clearly informing users about prohibited content and penal provisions and requires platforms to make reasonable efforts to prevent the sharing of prohibited information. The advisory also highlights the need for platforms to comply with existing IT rules and communicate their rules, regulations, privacy policy, and user agreement in the user’s preferred language. Recent ‘deepfake’ videos featuring actors have raised concerns about deceptive content, leading to demands in the Rajya Sabha for a SEBI-like regulatory body for social media platforms to curb the threat of deepfakes and synthetic videos, which are endangering democracy.
