Sri Lankan political leaders, including former member of parliament Sajith Premadasa and former cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya, praised India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar for promoting tourism in Sri Lanka. Jaishankar had encouraged people to visit the island country for their next holidays, and his support was appreciated by the Sri Lankan leaders amidst the country’s severe economic crisis. Sri Lanka has been struggling with a downturn in tourism due to Covid-induced lockdowns, mounting bad loans, foreign exchange crisis, heavy Chinese debts, and the failure of a move to shift the country’s agriculture to 100 per cent organic. India stepped in to support its southern neighbor by opening a line of credit and providing timely assistance to help the country recover from its economic crisis. The support from India was acknowledged and valued by the Sri Lankan leaders.
